The Lloyd’s List Podcast: Why shipping needs artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence will help the shipping industry make better decisions, argues Signal Group’s Ioannis Martinos, but technology has not yet reach a tipping point where there is sufficient trust from the users. The Greek ship manager and shipping AI pioneer joins the Lloyd’s List to talk about how technology can help shipping manoeuvre through the 2020 sulphur cap and why he is not a threat to brokers

A LOT can change in three and a half years.

That is how long it took Ioannis Martinos to launch Signal Ocean Platform, an AI-based service that aims to optimise commercial decisions for owners, operators and other market stakeholders.

Signal chief executive Mr Martinos joins Lloyd’s List reporter Anastassios Adamopoulos in London this week to discuss how the industry has become more receptive towards digital technology, particularly in the spot market. But he also points out that it has not yet reached a tipping point where there is sufficient trust in the technology.

“I think the majority of the industry believes that technology will enter in a meaningful way our industry in the next three to five years,” he says.

Mr Martinos, who also offers commercial shipmanagement operations through Signal Maritime, talks about how he sees software helping shipping manoeuvre through the 2020 sulphur cap and why he is not a threat to brokers.
