New solvency standards to be introduced into law by New Zealand’s regulator early next year include a requirement for catastrophe insurers writing earthquake coverage to demonstrate they hold enough capital to withstand a one-in-1,000-year event, similar to the classification applied to the first loss event to strike Christchurch last year, Insurance Day can reveal.
